Special Effects Sculpture for Film, Television, Animation

Ten- and eleven-year-olds have fun and learn devising and creating two- and three-dimensional sequential sculpture based on geometric and abstract shapes. The effect can be similar to those they may have seen on film, television or animation. Students turn the sculpture into a moving image to tell a simple story. The story may be fantastical, or from experience in their own neighborhoods.

Students work collaboratively to invent simple stories, and to act out scenes using the sculptural shapes. The sculptural shapes are photographed and used as still frames to create a storyboard. The storyboard represents a sequence of shapes and transformations. Students explore how a series of still frames tells the story while morphing into the moving image.

Supportive, open discussion encourages different interpretations of the simple stories and scenes. As a variety of art forms connect in the moving image, students observe and discuss the influence of music, dance, visual arts, theater, poetry or creative writing on scenes.

While having fun and creating, ten- and eleven-year-old students practice the skills needed for being good team and audience members including: listening with their ears and minds, participating in discussions, being open to other opinions, respecting the director's vision, sitting still, remaining quiet in the theater, focusing on the moving image, and so on.

No experience necessary.
